In 2008, the US Congress commissioned the National Academy of Sciences to conduct the most comprehensive review of scientific studies, evidence, and observations to determine the validity of global climate change and how we should respond. They were charged with providing actionable advice to America's leaders and its citizens.

The summary of the NAS review, which involved hundreds of the country's most prominent scientists and researchers, unanimously concluded:

  • climate change is real
  • human activity has caused it
  • we need to limit the magnitude of climate change
  • we need to find ways to adapt to changing climate
  • we need to continue to advance the science of climate change
  • we need to inform leaders, decision-makers, and the public
  • everybody on the planet is a stakeholder
