Welcome to BIO140: Introduction to Human Disease

Hello! I am Dr. Steven Fenster. I would like to welcome you to the Summer 2020 BIO 140 Course online!

The course is a 5-week intensive online course offered by the Fort Lewis College Biology Department that fulfills the SC2 requirement for the General Education Curriculum required for graduation. This course is intended for non-science majors but students interested in human disease might also want to take this course.

How to be Successful in this Course

What follows is a very abbreviated version of expectations for success in this course.
Plan to spend 25/hours weekly on course readings, research, interactions, and assignments. To be successful, we recommend you work on this course daily.
You must be or become comfortable using the internet, email, Canvas (our Learning Management System). There are tutorials embedded in Canvas to help you familiarize yourself with these online learning tools.
You must have consistent and reliable access to the internet because you will need to do work on this course every day.
There is a textbook required for this course. In addition, you will be watching short videos and reading as pdf files on Canvas. Links are provided for you all videos and PDFs. IMPORTANT: SOME VIDEOS REQUIRE YOU LOGIN TO THE LIBRARY ACCOUNT WITH YOUR FORTLEWIS.EDU ACCOUNT.
You will also receive content information for your work in this course is through the Powerpoint presentations where I will provide narration to accompany the presentation.
You must communicate with me, your instructor, whenever you run into an issue (technological or course content). The best ways to contact me can be found on the instructor information page.
You must maintain contact with me in whatever form suits you best and you MUST let me know when you are having trouble so we can work together to resolve it. I cannot emphasize this enough - if I don't know about a problem you are having, I cannot help you fix it! Please keep the lines of communication between us open!
